Architecture intake
Record controller function, digital and analog point counts, scan-sensitive operations, local versus remote I/O, and expected expansion. This prevents a CPU choice based only on the initial bill of material.
GUIDED SPECIFICATION
Use a short engineering path to expose compatibility issues before quotations are compared.

Record controller function, digital and analog point counts, scan-sensitive operations, local versus remote I/O, and expected expansion. This prevents a CPU choice based only on the initial bill of material.
Identify PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, serial links, topology, switch ownership, addressing policy, and the devices that must exchange status or commands.
Check 24 V DC supply capacity, DIN rail width, terminal access, cable bend space, heat sources, ambient limits, and enclosure ingress protection before release.
Align the requested part references with datasheets, wiring guidance, applicable declarations, accessories, and agreed substitution boundaries for procurement.
“Need an Abb Plc” leaves supply voltage, I/O mix, protocol, expansion, approvals, and cabinet constraints unresolved. Quotes can appear comparable while describing incompatible scopes.
A dated I/O schedule, network diagram, electrical conditions, panel envelope, destination market, and substitution rules give engineering and purchasing the same decision record.
Include known constraints. If a parameter is unknown, state that explicitly so the response can identify the remaining engineering decision instead of assuming a value.
The review does not replace machine risk assessment, functional safety validation, protection coordination, or commissioning. Published limits must be checked for the precise CPU, module, accessory, firmware, orientation, and ambient condition.
